- Reaction Mechanism: When water interacts with these minerals, a chemical reaction occurs. For magnesium, the typical reaction is:
\[ \text{Mg} + 2 \text{H}_2\text{O} \rightarrow \text{Mg(OH)}_2 + \text{H}_2 \]
