Frequently Asked Questions

How Alkaline Water Pitchers make Hydrogen Infused  Water

The Pitcher of Life Alkaline Water Pitchers  incorporate mixed media that releases hydrogen into the water using a combination of minerals that react with the water to produce molecular hydrogen (H2). Here’s how this happens:

  1. Mineral Composition: These Pitchers  contain a mix of minerals like magnesium, calcium, and some proprietary additional elements and ceramics that are capable of reacting with water. Magnesium is particularly crucial as it reacts directly with water.
  2. Reaction Mechanism: When water interacts with these minerals, a chemical reaction occurs. For magnesium, the typical reaction is:  \[ \text{Mg} + 2 \text{H}_2\text{O} \rightarrow \text{Mg(OH)}_2 + \text{H}_2 \] In this reaction, magnesium reacts with water (H2O) to form magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)2) and hydrogen gas (H2). This reaction is slow and occurs over time as water is in contact with the mineral media.
  3. Hydrogen Generation: The hydrogen gas produced is molecular hydrogen, which is soluble in water to a certain extent. As the reaction occurs within the Pitcher of Life, hydrogen dissolves into the water, making it "hydrogen-rich."
  4. Alkalinity Increase: Alongside hydrogen production, the water's pH is increased due to the formation of magnesium hydroxide, a weak base, which contributes to the alkalinity of the water.
  5. Additional Media: the Pitcher of Life also includes additional layers or types of media to enhance ionization, add trace minerals, improve taste, and further increase the pH and antioxidant properties of the water.

The effectiveness of the Pitcher of Life in producing significant amounts of hydrogen and altering the water's properties is based on the design, the type and amount of minerals used, and the contact time between the water and the media.

What is the capacity of the glass water filter Pitcher of Life?

The Borosilicate Glass Pitcher of Life has a 3.75 capacity and the holding tank (where the filtered,
alkalized water is held, holds 2.5 liters). I tested the prototype for 3 months before we went into production, and it worked fine. I always filled it up again after I poured several glasses of alkaline drinking water. We made some larger versions, but because it is the high quality Borosilicate Glass, the weight for my Wife was a little too much. We modified the final version, that we put into production, by making the glass handle larger, and adding a food-grade, stainless steel underside to the lid.

Do alkaline water pitchers really work?

Alkaline water pitchers are designed to raise the pH level of tap water and make it more alkaline, which is believed by some to have health benefits. The pitchers contain a filter that typically use activated carbon to remove impurities and contaminants from the water and raise the pH level. The better quality alkaline water purifying pitchers also use ion exchange resinfor extra purification, so look for these.  The Pitcher of Life® Brand is one of thetop quality pitchers that uses this technology.  This Brand is also coming outwith a new technology that will remove 99.3% of fluoride.  This will be the firstalkaline water pitcher to integrate this technology. There are hundreds of studies and articles proving that drinking alkaline water has over 40 health benefits, such as reducing the symptoms of acid reflux, improving hydration, and many more.As for the effectiveness of alkaline water pitchers, they can be an affordable and convenient way to make alkaline water at home. However, the degree to which they actually raise the pH level of the water can vary depending on factors such as the specific pitcher, the quality of the filter, and the water source.  That’s whywe recommend an established Brand.  Again, our choice is Pitcher of Life® as it is a Division of Life Ionizers and its Parent Company has been around since 1996.  Their Brand ranks in the Top 1%.It is important to note that the top quality alkaline water pitchers remove many contaminants but you may want to run a free water report to know “What’s in Your Water”!   Visit www.LifeWaterReport.com for a comprehensive water report on your City’s water source.  Once you review your report, you can decide if youwant to add a pre-filter system that you can use to maximize the clean-up of your water prior to putting it into your Alkaline Water Pitcher. It is also important to follow the manufacturer's instructions for the use and maintenance of the pitcher, including regularly replacing the filter. The most effective way is to replace your filter every 2 months when 2 people are using it. Replace every month if 3 to 4 people are using it.Overall, alkaline water pitchers can be a convenient way to make alkaline water at home, and it is important to also maintain a balanced and healthy diet. If you have concerns about the quality of your drinking water, we suggest you use the service mentioned above.

How do alkaline water filter work?

Alkaline water filters typically use a combination of activated carbon and ion exchange resin to filter tap water and raise the pH level to make it more alkaline. The specific process by which alkaline water filters work can vary depending on the make and model of the filter, but generally follows these steps:

  • Filtration: The first stage of the process involves passing tap water through a filter, which is typically made up of activated carbon. This removes impurities and contaminants from the water, such as chlorine, sediment, and heavy metals.  A great alkaline water pitcher will have at least a six (6) layer filtration, alkalization filter.  Some high quality counter top units will have multiple filters.
  • Ion exchange: After the water has been filtered, it passes through a second stage in which it comes into contact with ion exchange resin. This resin is typically made up of negatively charged ions, such as calcium and magnesium, which attract and bind to positively charged ions in the water, such as hydrogen ions. This process can help to raise the pH level of the water and make it more alkaline.  When you bind extra hydrogen atoms to water, you make H3O, which is an antioxidant – which neutralizes free radicals and slows down aging
  • Mineralization: Some alkaline water filters may also include a third stage in which the water is infused with additional minerals, such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium, to further increase the alkalinity of the water and add beneficial minerals.

Overall, alkaline water filters work by removing impurities and contaminants from tap water and increasing the pH level to make it more alkaline. The specific process used by each filter can vary, and it is important to follow the manufacturer's instructions for use and maintenance to ensure optimal filtration performance.

Which alkaline water filter is best?

Determining the "best" alkaline water filter depends on several factors, such as the specific needs and preferences of the individual, the quality of the water source, and the budget for the filter. However, here are a few factors to consider when choosing an alkaline water filter:

  • Filtration performance: Look for an alkaline water filter that effectively removes impurities and contaminants from your water source. Many alkaline water filters use a combination of activated carbon and ion exchange resin to filter the water, but the specific type and quality of the filter media can vary.
  • pH level: Consider the pH level that the filter is capable of achieving. Alkaline water filters typically aim to raise the pH level of the water to between 7.5 and 9.5, which is more alkaline than typical tap water. But the pH level will depend on the initial water that is put in the water pitcher.  Well water tends to be acidic, so the alkaline water pitcher will raise the pH, but not to the level you would obtain from city water, which starts out at about 7.0 pH.  Remember this:  well water
can have many more toxic chemicals that rain water, as well as city water.
  • Mineralization: Some alkaline water filters also add beneficial minerals, such as calcium and magnesium, back into the water to enhance its alkalinity and provide additional health benefits.
  • Size and capacity: Consider the size and capacity of the filter to ensure that it meets your needs. Some filters are designed for individual use, while countertop units are designed for larger households.
  • Cost: Watch out for replacement filters that are less than others.  This usually
means the manufacturer is using low quality medias.  Choose Quality!

Ultimately, the "best" alkaline water filter comes from an established Brand, as they have to maintain their Brand name.  Our research shows that the Pitcher of Life Brand is the Number One Choice!
